Back with the EMGA after a year away is The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, MN. Yesterday I had a chance to visit the Jewel for the first time. After viewing breathtaking photographs for years, I finally made my way to breathtaking Lake City to see if the reality lives up to the photos. In short, it does.
If you’ve spent any time in southeastern Minnesota you realize that this is arguably the most beautiful part of the state. The drive from the Twin Cities, while rather “agri-like” for the first half leaving the metro area, gives way to a stunningly gorgeous trek along Highway 61. Traveling through Red Wing is an absolute treat with its history and “days gone by” way of life. You can see why the people of this area stay here forever. Then on to Lake City along Lake Pepin.
As for the course itself, The Jewel plays over 7,000 yards from the tips and can give the best golfers everything they can handle. It’s designed by Hale Irwin and frankly, the back 9 is as impressive as any golf course I’ve seen or played in the state. The par 3 11th may be the most memorable hole on the course, but the setting in the bluffs of SE Minnesota will take away your breath.
In the next few days we’ll post a video to the blog so you can get a feel for The Jewel. Yes, there have been financially challenging times, but let’s be clear – that’s in the past. The course is on the rise, rounds played are up and if you get down to play it, trust me. You’ll be back.
