How Golfing Apps are Changing the Game

Dallas Mavericks owner, “Shark Tank” star and money magnet Mark Cuban was recently quoted as saying that software applications (apps) are the new millionaire makers. So why shouldn’t the game of golf get into the app act? Well, it has, and while we are not reporting growth of new golf millionaires, golf apps are changing the game. And there are plenty of them out there to help change yours.

Golf apps array from range finders loaded with countless golf courses for easy navigation to swing tips from the best teachers in the game. If you need to find a tee time, there is an app for that. How about some help on the range? There is an app for that. Here is a look at some of the best golf apps available—all a finger click away.

GHIN

One of the first apps you should download is the GHIN app through the Minnesota Golf Association (free to MGA members). You can use your phone to post every round you play and establish a legitimate golf handicap with GHIN (Golf Handicap and Information Network). Download it through the MGA and you will be connected to the MGA’s website and plenty of information about golf around the state, including course searches, championship news, live scoring in season and more. Support local golf and legitimize your handicap. (Go to the App Store and search for GHIN Mobile.)

My Pro To Go

If you plan to spend any time on the driving range (and you know you should), the My Pro To Go app provides great feedback on your swing. The app on your camera phone allows you to film your swing from two angles (side and back) and then upload it to a computer. Then, within 24 hours, you can view the video and break down your swing frame-by-frame to make corrections and swing adjustments. It’s a great app for effective practice time and game improvement. (Note: The app is free; lesson plans start at $39.) www.myprotogo.com

GolfLogic

Called the “No. 1 golf app” on their website, the versatile GolfLogic golf app can lay a pretty good stake to that claim. The app, with more than four million members, has plenty to offer. You can book a tee time, get courses with GPS distances to holes, hazards and layups, score tracking for your foursome and stat tracking to help you determine the strengths and weaknesses of your game. The app is free but a premium membership offers golf tips, club-tracking and exclusive deals to gear, tee times, lessons and travel packages. (The Premium membership is $4.99 for a month or $29.99 for one year.) www.golflogix.com

SwingSmart

If you feel ready to take the next step in game improvement (as opposed to listening to the members of your regular foursome), SwingSmart might be the app for you. SwingSmart has golf tips and instruction from Peter Kostis, one of the best swing analysts in the game. The CBS broadcaster and Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher provides video tips and swing instruction designed to address some of the common mistakes golfers make. The app includes the SwingSmart club sensor to upload an accurate 3-D swing data onto your iPhone or iPad—and you can send the data to an instructor of your choosing. Sounds great, right? It is, but golf instruction from the best doesn’t come free. (The sensor and app are $249). www.swingsmart.com.
